The Shelter Island History Museum collects and preserves the artifacts, records and stories that define the island's unique history.
The Senior Foundation began as the Shelter Island Senior Citizens Affairs Council around 2000, when most of its current clientele was just starting to think about senior-hood. It was founded by a group led by Seymour Weissmann to raise money to subsidize the local senior services. Their mission is to help pay for the things that Shelter Island’s senior citizens need to be comfortable, healthy and happy.
Located in beautiful Shelter Island, New York, the Shelter Island Lions Club was chartered in 1950 and has remained a strong, vital club for more than 75 years. The Club now has 114 Regular Members and 7 Club Honorary Members. It is the largest of about 44 clubs in District 20S — the Lions Clubs of Suffolk County, New York, USA, and provides support for youth and adults in Shelter Island, in the local East End region, and around the world through the Lions Clubs International Foundation.
The Shelter Island Public Library’s purpose is to provide state-of the art resources, services, and technologies to meet the current and evolving needs of the community. It is the town’s primary year-round information and cultural resource for both residents and visitors. The Library’s staff and Board of Trustees focus on providing materials, services, programs, events, activities and staffing that promote education, information, access and usage, entertainment and the arts, for the benefit and enrichment of all segments of the community. Key audiences include adults, children of all ages, students and seniors as well as patrons with special needs. Critical resources include space, excellent staff, facilities, free programs and open access to materials and media.
The RAM Film Society is a live events entertainment initiative that transforms the traditional cinema experience. Through a year-round series of screenings, the Society explores the full spectrum of film, from indie gems to commercial blockbusters, family-friendly features, and timeless classics that appeal to diverse audiences.
The John Chamberlain Estate Archives contain rich visual and textual documentation of John Chamberlain’s life and work. The archives include published and unpublished writing, correspondence, photographs, videos, drawings, museum, gallery, and exhibition files ephemera and publications. The John Chamberlain Estate’s archival team is bringing to light significant archival material from the artist’s studio on Shelter Island, New York, and these paramount initiatives will further contextualize and provide new access routes into his practice.
Founded in 2015, Shelter Island Fireworks, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization, raising funds to maintain the annual fireworks show held at Crescent Beach on Shelter Island. In 2015, the show was facing difficulty and cancelled. A small group of dedicated board members encouraged the island to show its support of the event through monetary donations. As a result of the outpouring of support, they have continued to host premiere fireworks displays since 2015.
Founded by Toby Perlman in 1994, The Perlman Music Program (PMP) offers unparalleled musical training to young string players of rare and special talent. With a world-class faculty led by Itzhak Perlman and a signature summer program on Shelter Island, PMP is developing the future leaders of classical music within a nurturing and supportive community.
Situated on the east side of Shelter Island, Menhaden Lane offers a unique beach experience. While officially classified as a town landing and not a beach, its serene view of Gardiner’s Bay and Long Beach Bar “Bug” Lighthouse makes it a worthwhile visit.

The lands of Shelter Island’s Sylvester Manor were home for millennia to indigenous Manhansett People. The 236-acre site is the most intact remnant of a former slaveholding plantation north of Virginia. The site was home to eleven generations of Sylvester descendants, from 1652 until 2014, when it was gifted to the nonprofit organization Sylvester Manor. Over the past 370 years, Sylvester Manor has been a provisioning plantation, an Enlightenment-era farm, and a pioneering food industrialist’s summer estate. Today, the site includes a 1737 Manor House, a restored 19th-century windmill, an Afro-Indigenous Burial Ground, and a working farm along with educational, history & heritage and cultural arts programs open to all. Sylvester Manor was designated a Historic District of national significance on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.
Edged in white by 11 miles of coastline, Mashomack on Shelter Island is considered one of the richest habitats in the Northeast. Just 90 miles from New York City, the preserve covers over 2,350 acres of interlacing tidal creeks, mature oak woodlands, fields, freshwater marshes and underwater lands.
Mashomack has a rich mix of human and natural history. This ancestral land of the Manhanset peoples has housed generations of farmers, fishers and those seeking refuge from the constant bustle of life. Few know that the preserve was once a hunt and game club, and even fewer know that it was nearly transformed into housing developments more than once. Thankfully, The Nature Conservancy, together with the residents of Shelter Island and Long Island, was able to pull together a last-minute effort to save this “Jewel of the Peconic.”
